John Buckton of Darlington c1798 – 1868
John Buckton was born in Croft, North Yorkshire circa 1798.
He was a Grocer and Brandy Merchant with premises in High Row Darlington, Durham and married Jane Midcalf in 1846. During the 1850s and 60s their address was Harewood Hill, Darlington.
John was a shareholder and Director of the Stockton and Darlington Railway, the Worlds first public passenger railway. The railway opened on 27th September 1825 with “Locomotion” pulling one passenger coach and 150 wagons. John was also a Director of the Stockton, Middlesborough and Yarm Water Company. He died on 9th October 1868 in Darlington. His wife died 16th July 1870, also in Darlington.
Bucktons Yard, off High Row, in Darlington was named for John in 1832, where he was known locally as “Nancy” for his unusual walk and a love of gossip.
